movies 2Well so much for latest releases. I went and rented a couple older movies, covered the last couple decades…

Untouchables (1987). A Classic. Pretty much anything with Robert De Niro in my book is worth watching at least three times. I love a good gangster movie, plus it doesn’t hurt to have such an incredible cast: Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Charles Martin Smith, and Andy Garcia.

Jet Li’s Fearless (2006). I love me a good kung fu movie, especially when Jet Li makes an appearance. If I wasn’t a pastor, I think I’d like to be a kung fu master. This one has all the trimmings of a great fung fu movie, fights with all kinds of crazy Chinese weapons, (check out this list of 100 weapons) hand to hand, and while there’s no “Crouching Tiger” flying, there are some very cool moves. Surprisingly, there is a very good story line “This film tells the story of Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuanjia (1869-1910). Huo Yuanjia was the founder and spiritual guru of the Jin Wu Sports Federation“. Check out this quote:

Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself makes you fearless. – Lao Tzu

An American Tale (1991). Alright I know most of you remember this one, you cried. And I know you remember “Somewhere Out There” sung by James Ingram and Linda Ronstadt. We got this one for Miles as a “feel good” movie. He’s been watching too much Sonic X and Power Rangers lately, we wanted to soften him up a little.

super exThere’s not much to say. I am a little embarrassed to admit that we rented this one. Jen fell asleep, I caught up on blogging, other than a couple cheezy knee slappers, and seeing Dwight Schrute, this one was a bomb! When are we ever going to see something good?

3 thumbs

So I already posted about “The Fountain”. We like to rent movies – it’s way more economical than going to see them at $10 a pop – that’s a 20, plus another $20 for the babysitter, and we have to eat dinner – so it begins to add up (plus our last movie experience did not end well – see Date Night).

Anyway, not going to waste much time here: These movies all sucked. Jen fell asleep and I suffered my way through them because I cannot just not finish a movie. We are in a rut with all 3 of our last 3 rentals completely sucking. I think we’ll try “Ghost Rider” next – I don’t have my hopes up for this one either…

Wolverine is a Spanish Conquistador, no wait he’s a doctor, no wait he’s a buddah. I’m usually game for pretty much any movie, but uh, this one took the cake. I mean how did they even sell this script to begin with? I guess if you are into the purity of acting and cinematography and can throw the plot out the window then it’s pretty cool to watch.

I could be way wrong though: IMDB gives it 7.7 stars out of 10, and a myriad of Critics nominated it for all kinds of awards such as…

  • Best Actor: Hugh Jackman (huh?)
  • Best Special Effects (understandable if you like plants growing out of people)
  • Best Score (the most annoying repeating string part EVER!)
  • Best Cinematography (I’ll give them this one)
  • Excellence in Costume Design (no comment)
  • Most Original (most original suckness)
  • Best Editing (nope… it was about 2 hours too long)

I hope this wasn’t too negative, but I just wasted 2 hours of my life. My wife told me to turn it off, but I just couldn’t – I had to “finish it”.
